Wealthsimple Trade pros and cons
Below is a concise breakdown of the platform’s main benefits and limitations to help you weigh whether it fits your investing style.
The pros
- Commission-free trading for stocks and ETFs, a major draw for cost-conscious investors compared with many brokers that charge $4.95–$9.95+ per trade.
- No annual account fees or minimum balances on core accounts.
- Access to thousands of stocks and ETFs listed on major North American exchanges (NYSE, NASDAQ, TSX, and others), plus support for dozens of cryptocurrencies.
- Fractional shares let you buy portions of expensive stocks so you can invest with small amounts.
- Registered accounts available: TFSA, RRSP (and as of 2025, RRIFs and LIRAs), alongside personal (non-registered) accounts; crypto holdings are held in a separate non-registered crypto account.
- Instant deposits are possible—up to limits—so you can start trading quickly.
- Real-time quotes and unlimited price alerts are available to all users.
- The Wealthsimple app is clean, intuitive and beginner-friendly; a web platform is also available for desktop trading.
- Wealthsimple is a well-known brand regulated by IIROC and covered by the CIPF, giving investors an added layer of protection.
- Automated dividend reinvestment (DRIP) is available and can be toggled on or off in app settings.

The cons
- Limited product range: no mutual funds or IPO participation. The platform supports stocks, ETFs, options and selected cryptocurrencies only.
- U.S. dollar trades typically incur a currency conversion fee unless you hold a USD account. A USD account is free for Premium and Generation tiers but costs $10/month for Core clients.
- The platform lacks advanced trading analytics and granular data that experienced traders may expect.
- Withdrawals can take one to three business days depending on the account and asset type. Instant debit-card withdrawals are possible but carry a 2.5% fee and have transaction limits and partial card support.

Is Wealthsimple Trade good?
For many Canadians—particularly new and long-term passive investors—Wealthsimple offers a simple, low-cost way to buy and hold Canadian and U.S. stocks and ETFs. If you need a broader range of assets, deeper analytics or access to international exchanges and mutual funds, alternative brokerages like Questrade or Qtrade may be a better fit.
Wealthsimple Trade detailed review
Creating a Wealthsimple Trade account
Opening an account on mobile or desktop is straightforward and takes only minutes. Use your email and password, or sign in with an existing Wealthsimple account. You can open any combination of personal, TFSA, RRSP or crypto accounts. Wealthsimple also supports RRIFs and LIRAs as of 2025.
How to fund your Wealthsimple Trade account
Link your bank and transfer funds using bank transfer, Interac e-Transfer or debit card. Typical limits: bank transfers can support large amounts (three to five business days), Interac e-Transfer instant up to $3,000 CAD, and instant debit deposits up to $3,500 CAD. Direct deposits and wire transfers have no stated limits. Moving money between Wealthsimple account types is handled inside the app.
What can you trade with Wealthsimple Trade?
Wealthsimple supports stocks and ETFs listed on major North American exchanges (TSX, NYSE, NASDAQ, NEO, Cboe, CSE, BATS and TSXV). You can obtain global exposure by buying ETFs that track international markets. Buying individual stocks outside North America is not supported, though many non-U.S. companies are available via ADRs listed on U.S. exchanges.
How to buy stocks and ETFs on Wealthsimple Trade
Search by company name or ticker, choose the account (RRSP, TFSA, personal), select order type (market, fractional, limit or stop-limit), enter quantity, review and place the order. Market orders execute immediately at the best available price; fractional orders are processed at the end of the trading day; limit and stop-limit let you define target prices.
Trading crypto with Wealthsimple Trade
Wealthsimple allows crypto trading in a dedicated non-registered account. The platform offers more than 50 cryptocurrencies and displays price data and charts. Crypto trading fees vary by tier (2% Core, 1% Premium, 0.5% Generation). Deposits and withdrawals of coins do not carry extra platform fees, but Wealthsimple manages wallets centrally—users do not control private keys.
The app provides clear risk disclosures and requires users to acknowledge key crypto risks, including volatility, short track record and technical/security issues. Crypto gains in non-registered accounts are taxable; investors can gain registered exposure indirectly through crypto ETFs that are eligible for TFSA or RRSP holdings.

Common questions about Wealthsimple Trade
Are there really no commission fees?
Yes—stock and ETF trades are commission-free, which can meaningfully reduce costs for frequent or long-term investors. That said, avoid trading more often simply because trades are free; overtrading can still harm returns.
What is Wealthsimple Trade’s cost structure?
Wealthsimple generates revenue from a few sources: currency conversion fees (typically 1.5% for CAD↔USD conversions for accounts without USD balances), crypto trading fees (0.5%–2% depending on tier), and options fees (USD$0.75–$2.00 per contract). There are also small fees for niche services such as broker-assisted trades or wire transfers. Premium and Generation tiers include some benefits like free USD accounts that help avoid currency conversion costs.
Is there anything you can’t buy on Wealthsimple Trade?
You cannot buy mutual funds or participate in IPOs on Wealthsimple Trade. The platform is focused on North American stocks, ETFs, options and supported crypto. If you need a wider product set, consider other brokerages that offer mutual funds and international exchange access.
Is Wealthsimple Trade safe?
Wealthsimple is regulated by IIROC and client assets are protected under CIPF rules, similar to major Canadian brokerages. The business is part-owned by established financial firms and serves millions of customers, which adds to its credibility. Still, as with any financial service, follow best practices for security and keep investment risk in mind.
Should you invest with Wealthsimple Trade?
Wealthsimple Trade is a strong choice for beginners and long-term passive investors who want low-cost access to North American stocks and ETFs, plus an easy way to experiment with crypto. If you require advanced trading tools, a wider range of securities, or direct foreign-market access, explore other brokerages. Remember that commission-free trading lowers costs but doesn’t eliminate market risk or the pitfalls of frequent trading.
